After graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1982 from Kent State University, Reed set up his own design business and art studio.

In 1988, after marrying Nancy, they moved Artwork to Wear to Cortland, Ohio and began directing their talents almost entirely towards jewelry design and manufacturing.
